PVC and HDPE sewer pipe
PVC and HDPE are the materials most modern sewer laterals are replaced in. Both are plastics; they behave differently, and the difference mostly shows up in how they are joined and where they can be installed.
The important thing for a homeowner is what neither of them fixes. A new pipe laid at the wrong fall, on poor bedding, or into a connection nobody looked at will have the same problems the old one had, in a shorter time than anybody expects.

How the two differ in practice
These are the differences that change a proposal. Neither is a recommendation, and both are used successfully in ordinary residential work.
- PVC
- Rigid, supplied in lengths, joined at fittings. Widely stocked and widely worked with. Its rigidity means it depends on the bedding underneath it — laid on uneven ground, it holds that unevenness.
- HDPE
- Flexible, and joined by fusing lengths into a continuous run with no joints along it. That continuity is why it is the usual choice for pipe bursting, where the new pipe is pulled through the path of the old one.
- Jointing
- The practical difference. A jointed run has places roots can enter and ground movement can open; a fused run does not. This matters more on some properties than others, and the reason should be stated rather than assumed.
- Where each tends to be used
- Open-cut replacement is commonly PVC; bursting is commonly HDPE. If a proposal pairs them the other way round, that is a fair question rather than an error.
The common misconception
That replacing in a modern material resolves the situation permanently. It resolves the material, which is often not what was actually wrong.
If the original line failed because of ground movement, a poorly supported crossing, root pressure at a particular point, or a connection nobody has examined, then those conditions are still there after the work. Ask what the proposal does about the cause, not only about the pipe.

- What is the plan for bedding and fall along the new run?
- Does the new line follow the existing route or a different one?
- What happens at the connection at the far end, and has anyone seen it?
- What approvals does this need, and who obtains them?
- What is warranted, for how long, and what voids it?
- If the original failure had a cause, what does this work do about that cause?
