Cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning is the most common sewer intervention and the one most likely to be repeated. It is also the one that produces the least information — unless somebody deliberately gathers it while the equipment is still on site.
SewerOwner does not perform, arrange, or sell drain cleaning. These pages cover what each method attempts, what to ask about reach and access, and what a cleared line does and does not tell you about the pipe itself.
The moment that matters is the clearing itself. Whoever is holding the cable knows things then that nobody can reconstruct a week later, and the questions worth asking take about two minutes.

Can you just keep having it cleaned?
Sometimes, yes — and plenty of properties are run that way for years. Repeat cleaning is a maintenance strategy rather than a failure to decide, provided it is chosen deliberately and the numbers are actually compared.
What decides it is the interval and what is behind it. A line cleared once every few years is a different proposition from one cleared twice a year, and an interval that is shortening is the signal worth watching. That is why the date of every clearing is worth recording: without the interval, nobody — including you — can tell which of those two you have.
This is not a recommendation either way. Repeat cleaning does not establish that a line is sound, and a shortening interval does not establish that it is broken. Both are inputs to a decision that still needs an inspection behind it.
Questions worth asking before repeat cleaning becomes the plan
Ask the person who cleared the line, while they are still on site and the equipment is still out.
- How far in did you reach, and did you get to the end of the run?
- What came back on the cable or in the water?
- Would you expect this to need doing again, and roughly how soon?
- Is there anything you saw that a camera should look at before we clear it again?
- What would you want recorded today so the next clearing can be compared to this one?
Maintenance approaches at a glance
Routine cleaning
Clearing the line with mechanical equipment to restore flow.
Restore flow by removing material from inside the line using equipment fed in from an access point.
Cannot establish: the condition of the line; that the underlying situation is resolved; that the problem will not recur; that repair is or is not needed.
Root cutting
Using cutting equipment to clear root material from inside the line.
Remove root material from the inside of the line so that flow is restored through the affected section.
Cannot establish: that the pipe is damaged; where roots entered the line; that roots will not return; that replacement is required.
Hydro jetting
Using high-pressure water to clear material from inside the line.
Clear material from the pipe wall and carry it out of the line using pressurised water delivered through a nozzle.
Cannot establish: the condition of the line; that the pipe is sound; that the result will persist.
