Bellied or sagging sewer line
A belly is a length of sewer that sits lower than the pipe either side of it, so water stands in it instead of draining away. It is a real condition and it does cause real problems.
It is also the observation most often over-read, because the evidence for it is a picture of water and every sewer line has some water in it.

Why standing water is not the same as a belly
A camera enters a line that has just been used, or has just been cleaned, or that carries a small constant flow. Water sits in front of the lens. That is normal.
A belly is a claim about the shape of the pipe over a length — that it descends, levels out or rises, and comes back up. Establishing it means seeing both ends of the dip, with distances, not photographing the middle of it.
What would support the description
- footage showing the line descending into the water and rising out of it, with distances at both points
- a stated depth of standing water, and how that depth was arrived at
- the line having been cleaned first, so what is seen is water rather than debris
- a surface locate, so the length can be placed on the ground rather than only on the tape
- a history of backups that matches the location
When it matters and when it does not
A shallow belly on a line that has never backed up is a characteristic of that line. Plenty of sewers have had one for decades and carried flow throughout.
A belly matters when it is deep enough to hold solids, when the line backs up repeatedly at that point, or when it is getting worse — which can only be established by comparing two inspections taken at different times. That comparison is the single most useful thing to arrange, and it is far cheaper than an excavation.
What to ask
- Where does the low section start and end, in distance from which access point?
- How deep is the standing water, and how did you establish that?
- Was the line cleaned before this footage was taken?
- Can you show me the pipe descending into it and rising out of it?
- Has the line been located from the surface, so we know where this is in the garden?
- What is above this length — lawn, paving, a driveway, a tree?
- If we film it again in six or twelve months, what would tell us it is changing?
What would change the answer

- the distance at which it begins and ends
- whether the line was flowing or had been recently used when it was filmed
- whether the depth of the water was measured, and how
