Orangeburg pipe

Orangeburg is a pipe made from wood fibre bound with pitch. It was used for sewer laterals in parts of the twentieth century, and it is one of the few materials whose name alone tends to end a conversation.

It has a real reputation and the reputation is not baseless. It is also the single most useful word a contractor can say to move a homeowner from "get a second opinion" to "sign here", which is why it is worth understanding what saying it does and does not establish.
