Organising prior work
Most properties have some sewer history and very little documentation of it. Reconstruction is usually partial, and a partial record honestly labelled is far more useful than a confident guess.

The short answer
Most properties carry some sewer history and very little documentation of it. Reconstructing it means assembling partial sources — permit records, invoices kept by a previous owner, municipal files, and any inspection footage that survived — into a picture honest about what it cannot show.
A partial record that labels its gaps is more useful than a confident summary that hides them. A contractor reading “no record of the line beyond forty feet” can plan for that. A contractor reading a guess has no way to tell it is a guess.
Start with the permitting authority, because it is the one source that is both official and usually searchable by address.
Sources worth trying
- the permit history held by the local authority
- the disclosure statement from your purchase
- the operating authority’s connection record
- any paperwork left in the property
- the previous owner, if contact is possible
- neighbours, where work was done across several properties
- evidence on the ground: a newer section of driveway, a cleanout of a different age
